Its...? Its...? Um... Something...

This shot was taken two years ago when I enjoyed a 'tour' Citizen's Gas and Coke facility on the East side of Indianapolis. This place was a major inspirational factor for #4 in my recent Nighthawk Photography post. Take my word for it, parts of this facility are downright foul with unspeakable substances bubbling up from the ground, don't believe me? See for yourself here.

Scenes from the City-County Building Observation Deck

On the 28th floor of Indianapolis' City-County Building is a time machine to 1960's, know as it's observation deck... I took my 250mm lens up there for some shots of areas around downtown.

The service elevator drops you off here; the 26th floor. You then catch another elevator to the 28th floor.


It has probably looked this way since 1962, they year the building was constructed...


The industrial south east part of town; I am rather proud of this shot; I highly recommend you view this large on black. You may click the image to do so.

On E. Prospect Street

A real junkyard dog protested my presence here...Luckily a chain separated me from the surly Rottweiler...


Safety and quality, no doubt; but the environment is quite a lofty claim for the king of Indianapolis Brown fields...I can't even imagine what the remediation and reclamation cost of this place would be. Walk anywhere close and you can smell the benzene and coal tar. There was recently a good post about brown field development on Urban Indy, and may accessed here.

This red stuff was bubbling up out of the ground, running down the street, and into a storm drain (which undoubtedly drains into the nearby Pleasant Run).

This is actually at Keystone and Pleasant Run Pkwy, but there was some curiosity about this gas container at the no longer operating Citizen's Gas and Coke facility, so I decided to shoot it when I was down there...

Now that this post has been titled like a 'Made for television movie', lets get down to business...

Awww man, that's no fun...


I have no idea of what the function is for most of these various parts of the plant, so I won't even try to explain them ;-)






As I walked by, I could hear the very distinct sound of extreme volumes of gas under pressure flowing though these pipes.






Probably shouldn't be here, but hey nobody caught me...


This monster can be seen from many different parts of the East side.


I wonder how often these stairs were climbed when this plant was operating?


Not quite sludge, not quite mud...Smludge?
