The Red Hook within our Veins

There are few things more pleasing to a lens than oxidized iron, and its alloys.  We all get to enjoy the benefits of it, and I'm not just referring to its aesthetic value; without it, we would be deceased.  The same iron oxide that consumes this structure delivers the oxygen we breathe to where its needed within each of us; unless of course, you're Vulcan, then a photo of a copper roof would be much more appropriate.  Not to get sidetracked here, this structure is one of the rapidly disappearing relics of Red Hook's past and sits near the Gowanus Expressway.

Beach 36th Street

I spend a large amount of time in the Western part of Queens, and have featured many parts of it on this blog.  I rarely get the opportunity to make it out to the outlying areas of Queens to the east, so I feel like I have neglected some of the most interesting parts of the five boroughs here.  This post is the beginning of an effort to rectify this situation.  This shot was captured in the area known as Edgemere, on the Rockaway Peninsula, near Far Rockaway.

I was drawn to this street, for its quite a surreal site, even in some of the lighter density streets in New York City, to see something quite like this.  The streets themselves are completely accessible by car.  On one side of this area are a mix of residential neighborhoods and groups of new development, on the other, the Atlantic Ocean.

Discount Tile, Access to Jay-Z, and Shirt/banner matching combo

For better or worse, the transformation of Prospect Heights, and downtown Brooklyn as a whole, continues. Taken near 5th and Flatbush, near the Atlantic Yards project.

Haunted

An old, abandoned, residential building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  This neighborhood has become quite trendy and more and more modern condos keep going up, abeit slower due to the economy.  Instead of building cheap looking modern housing that won’t last as long as this building, lets give this structure a little love.

Wrong Side–Do Not Open

Definitely wouldn’t want to get stranded on a filthy abandoned platform would you?.  Taken at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station in Downtown Brooklyn…

Its...? Its...? Um... Something...

This shot was taken two years ago when I enjoyed a 'tour' Citizen's Gas and Coke facility on the East side of Indianapolis. This place was a major inspirational factor for #4 in my recent Nighthawk Photography post. Take my word for it, parts of this facility are downright foul with unspeakable substances bubbling up from the ground, don't believe me? See for yourself here.

Alone in Irish Hill

Formerly a working class Irish neighborhood on the near east side of Indianapolis, Irish hill is now no more than a ghost town where colonies of homeless people live under viaducts, much of it has returned to nature, or is populated with abandoned industrial buildings. Being so close to the Eli Lilly complex, Fountain Square, and Fletcher Place, I wonder if this area has a new urban future.

10 Street For Sale

This long vacant building at 10th and Pennsylvania Streets in the St. Joseph neighborhood of Indianapolis is becoming a canvas for bad graffiti...

The Survivors On Irish Hill

This area lies on almost complete abandon with the exception of a few old structures that have survived mass demolition and decay... All of the exact locations for these shots have been geotagged in flickr.

Going Feral

A colony of feral cats dominating an abandoned house near the corner of Washington and Highland on the near east side... I had to take this one at 250mm, for getting anywhere near them was out of the question; just taking this shot from across the street made them pretty nervous.

I know l sound like a broken record, but this shot contains copious amounts of detail and is much better if viewed large...

Can't Fight City Hall

...But you can vacate it ;) I have decided to post an Indianapolis Historic Structure oriented post every day this week. The old City Hall building(built 1910) is today's feature; it has been at one time, a location for the Indiana State Museum and the Indianapolis/Marion County Central Library.

The front...

Near 9th and Delaware

This was one of my favorite childhood stores back in the day...

Completely abandoned, boarded up, and for sale; it may still be a while for this building with the current economy...

I have linked these images to their Flickr source page, which will allow you to view larger sizes, and have access to other cool collaboration tools.

Haughville Castle

This structure along 10th street has always intrigued me. I have some closeups of the other places around the building for a full Haughville Neighborhood post I will do once I am finished shooting the area.

This is definitely much better if viewed large...

New York and Keystone

It will move though your colon faster than a speeding bullet and with more power than a locomotive; well alright that's enough of that.
