The Christian Park Vicinity

Here are some shots of Christian Park and its surrounding on yet another beautiful day...

Something is not right here...

On English Avenue

Sherman and English; someone once ran a red light, and plowed into yours truly at this very intersection a few years ago...Nobody was was hurt; the cars involved... well, that's a different story...

Back when English carried the route of US 52 (pre- I-465), which then merged into Southeastern Avenue (then US 421)...

The sky was gorgeous today!

Including these shot is a bit of a stretch considering that this is about a mile away from Christian Park, but I'm quite fond of this old viaduct bridge...

Thundermutt once referred to this place as the "ol' swimmin' hole"; a popular place for kids to cool off, but beware the CSOs...

My Gram lived on English, so I spent a lot of time there growing up. I remember every year there would be a Little League parade down the street to kick off the season. I wonder if they still do that.

Great pics of the area! I have fond memories of the DQ.

I love the shot of the 8'5" clearance. I don't think I've ever seen one so low before! It'd be cool if your shots were geotagged so I could more easily see some of them live and in person!

Thanks for the comments everyone. Rebecca, I don't know if the parade still happens, but the area is always vibrant with Little League sports. Jimgrey, I've thought about geotagging my shots in Flickr, but have not gotten around to actually doing that. This 8'5" clearance is on Pleasant Run Pkwy between Brookville and Washington Street. If you are on Washington Street, and head south on Colorado Avenue, you will run right in to it.

Where is the swimming hole, and what are CSOs?

The swimming hole is just south of the RR bridge, and CSOs are Combined Storm/Sewer water overflow outlets. Indianapolis has a combined sewage/stormwater handling system. When it rains, the sewers quickly become inundated with water, so the overflow flows directly into local waterways; sewage and all. White River, Pogue's Run, Pleasant Run, and Fall Creek all have CSO outlets along them.

Further information about CSO's on wikipedia entry. The CSO system allowed the city to lower costs during initial infrastructure development, but it is a serious problem now that so much of the city is impervious to rainwater. The city is required to reduce or eliminate these by the EPA. CSO's are the reason that green roofs are encouraged and downspouts tied into the sewers are disallowed.

On a side note, I was following a fire engine truck when it passed under the 8'-5" sign earlier this week. It made it through, but they definitely went about it very slowly and carefully.

Sorry to be slow on this one...was fully occupied over the holiday weekend (and with the lawnmower this week)!

The low bridge isn't really that far from Christian Park...you can almost see the park's rec center from the viaduct, and the park proper comes up to the corner of Brookville and Pleasant Run Parkway.

The bridge is the "northern gateway" into the Christian Park neighborhood, which runs from Sherman (or the Belt Line RR) to Emerson, railroad to railroad. So the neighborhood is over a mile east-west, and about six or eight blocks north-south centered on English.

What's extra-cool about the viaduct is that it's low because it's a double-decker: RR over street over creek. I think it originally only served the creek and the box culvert was added to allow the street and Pleasant Run Trail to pass through too.

Thanks for another feature on my part of town!
