The Crumbling Vacated Merrill Street

I visited Indianapolis and the family for the holiday season and was supposed to go back to NYC on Sunday. That was until a major blizzard pummelled the east coast; as a result I am still here and that extended time can mean only one thing: Indianapolis Photos! This collection focuses on the area of Pennsylvania and the now vacated Merrill street, near the Lilly complex.
Used to be a tunnel, but most of that has been ripped out other than the rail overpass. Used to be a prominent hangout for homeless people and Lilly employees that smoked until all this was done. The dozens of homless people moved to another similar underpass about five blocks away. Taken on the near south side of Indianapolis in an area known as Pogue's Run.

Its Coming

Snow and ice will be here soon enough. This shot was taken at the corner of Lincoln and East on the south side of Indianapolis last February.

Layn' It Down I and II

Both of these shots are in the same location of this previous post in the South Meridian/Concord neighborhood of Indianapolis... This area demonstrates some of the best graffiti that Indianapolis has to offer. Historically German, this working class neighborhood on the south side of Indianapolis is home to Sacred Heart Church, Vollrath Tavern, Concord Neighborhood Center, and several historic buildings and row houses.

South Side Charm / Money and Weeds to Burn

In the Concord/South Meridian neighborhood of Indianapolis, near the corner of Palmer and Talbott. This neighborhood is located about a mile south of downtown and both Sacred Heart Church and The Vollrath Tavern are historic landmarks that reside this area.

Both these shots are best if viewed large and are geotagged; both may be viewed in their Flickr pages and may be accessed by clicking on them.

Entrance to the Realm of the Unknown

Well, OK, it takes you over the Madison Expressway from the Vollrath to the Bates-Hendricks neighborhood...

Old Madison

A small little stretch of Old Madison Avenue, just north of Raymond Street is just about all that remains of the original section of Madison Avenue from its pre-expressway days...

Talbott/Pennsylvania and Morris

This section is not too far from the Sacred Heart area on the south side.

This mural runs from Talbott all the way to Madison...

Illinois and McCarty

I always like to start a show with a bang, but this entrance to Indianapolis has other plans...

Meridian and McCarty

Shapiro's is located on the southwest corner of the intersection...

On the Southeast corner of the intersection...

On the Northwest side of the intersection, the building says Gill Saw Service...

Taking a peek inside, and the condition is worse than the outside... This is definitely worth a view in large.

Shapiro's is a long time Indianapolis icon, and quite a tasty one at that...

Interesting Murals

The first two are the same mural, which is located on E. 10th Street in Woodruff Place.

This shot provides a much better view of the mural, which I can say is the first mural I've seen that features a periodic table...

This shot doesn't really do the mural justice, but I like the angle...

These next three were taken on Palmer Avenue, near the Vollrath, which is close to Sacred Heart Church...

This roid-raging angel kind of reminds me of Fist of the Northstar...

This whole building is one large canvas...
These are much better viewed large...

The beginning of Autumn in Fountain Square

The changes in the day cycle are already apparent; the days are getting shorter, the leaves are changing color, and the 'fall clouds' have arrived.

These two shots were taken on Morris Street, just west of Shelby Street.

Desolation Row II

On Madison Avenue, just south of downtown is this six lane beast...Raymond Street and a single crosswalk are the only paths across it.

These are much better if viewed large...

A few more shots of the area, which is near the Bates-Hendricks area...
