Off the Beaten Path...

Just outside of Beech Grove and right off the Amtrak grounds on Emerson Avenue is an ancient railroad underpass. Although its probably not quite as old as this one, but its in far better condition and stamped with the year of 1912...

Indianapolis Relics - Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge

This section of the railroad was taken from Sherman Drive between Southeastern and English Avenue on the east side. This is one of my favorite railroad bridges in the city.


The bridge is stamped with the year of 1916, and it appears ground water has been working on it since about that time.

Indianapolis Relics - Station 18

This used to be the IFD firehouse #18 on W. Washington Street and Tibbs Avenue. My grandfather spent much of his 30+ year career as an Indianapolis firefighter here. I remember as a small child playing on the fire engines and even have a picture of me fitting between the bumper and the truck. My grandfather never really used to tell stories about his job as a fireman, but did share some anecdotes of having to make frequent stops to the nearby, now defunct Central State Hospital...False calls resultant of the psych patients pulling the alarms.

Industrial Indianapolis

Indianapolis has many interesting old rust belt relics. I'm already naturally interested in scenes like this, but it does open a door into Indianapolis' past.

Old grain elevator on Sherman Drive and Raymond Street. I found this place to look much more appealing in back and white.

Indianapolis Coke Plant on Prospect Street. I don't know exactly when this place is to be dismantled, but I thought I would take some shots of it before it disappears.

The Urbanophile recently did an excellent post about sidewalks just like this one; this configuration may work in munchkin land, but I'm 6'4", and dude, this is just not cool. Taken on Sherman Drive, near Raymond Street.

Indianapolis Relics - Tibbs Drive In

Not far from Tibbs ave. and Washinton St. is the Tibbs Drive In. The last operating drive in theatre in Indianapolis if you don't count the one in Clermont. The theatre has both old school speakers and an FM broadcasted frequency as a means of delivering audio to it's viewers. According to the sign, it will reopen on March 2, 2009.

Indianapolis Architecture - ?

I actually need a little help with this one; I have tried various sources (mainly Emporis and Indiana Historical Society) to locate data on this building, but with little success. I remember seeing a picture of this building in a street shot dating back to 1912 in a historical Indianapolis book, but there was no information there either.

The building resides on Maryland street, close to Pennsylvania Street and the Majestic Building. If anyone could share any information they might know about this building, I would be greatly appreciative.
