Indianapolis Neighborhoods - Emerson Heights / Ellenberger Park

Emerson Heights is located on Indianapolis' east side near the intersection of 10th and Emerson, close to Irvington. The neighborhood is home to Ellenberger Park; a park that I used to ride my bike around when I was young. It has some decent trails, and is right off of the Pleasant Run Trail.

10th and Emerson

New York Street and Emerson Avenue

Many Classic Houses along Emerson Avenue, 10th Street, and along Ellenberger Park...

This looks eerily similar to the South Village Neighborhood I covered earlier this month...

There are still a few houses that need some work, but not many...

I like that brick duplex. Eastside rocks.

I think Ellenberger Park would be considered Irvington, not Emerson Heights. The northwest corner of Irvington is the intersection of 10th and Emerson and Ellenberger is well southeast of that intersection. With that quibble, I love your work.

Fun post. I don't know if you have seen this press release about Emerson Avenue beautification from two years ago, but I am hoping some of the items are acted on at some point. It would be a nice addition to the Eastside.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I remember seeing that press release a while ago, and it would be nice to see even if only a few items are implemented.

Anonymous is correct. The Irvington Comunity Council recoginizes 10th Street, Emerson, Brookville Road, and Kitley/Edmonson. Emerson Heights is bounded by 10th, Emerson, Michigan, and Linwood. There is some confusion because the part of Irvington north of the Parkway is not in the historic district, but it is part of the neighborhood. In any event, great photos of my neck of the woods.

Love taking virtual walks around Indy through your blog! :) Makes me a little less crazy in my window-less office.

I love your photos, and I spied you at 10th and Emerson, taking this shot. It was a delightful, if improvisational, stalking moment for me.

Thanks for the comments and compliments everyone! I knew it was only a matter of time before someone spotted me somewhere; you are the first!

Some of the photos are in Emerson Heights and some are in Irvington.
The dividing line is Emerson Avenue.

The Emerson Avenue Project is still in process - As Irvington knows, any project like that takes a while to make happen. The first phase is funded - we are working on the next phase as well as moving forward with the first phase.

BTW: Emerson Heights has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. We hope to have acceptance in 6 months.

I just discovered your blog and can't get enough. You can see the house where I grew up from your vantage point at Emerson and St. Clair. The house on the S/E corner is what we used to call Mrs. Flanigan's house - she had a boston terrier that never left the yard in the 1960's - that was before invisable fences! So much more of Irvington to photograph - now get busy!
