Indianapolis Relics - East Gate Mall

On the far Eastside(Shadeland Ave and Washington Street), is an old shopping mall that has been decaying for years....decades....
Coming soon to a shopping mall near you...

I used to see a lot movies here when I lived on the East side way back when...

It's sad to think that Hamilton Town Centre and the Metropolis will someday look like this. Perhaps I'm mistaken? But honestly, this pisses me off seeing how we keep sprawling out but nobody has the initiative or integrity to rebuild some of these malls. I'm sure they can somehow make them profitable and livable again. Hell, if I had the cash I'd at least TRY to!

Actually, Eastgate Consumer Mall has been bought and is being redeveloped as a technology center and data storage site.

"Return of the Nerds", Graeme? :)

I too saw a movie or two in that theater, had some food in the food court, shopped the "outlet" stores in the "mall".

E. This is a classic example of sprawl, and do believe that these lifestyle centers as they are called, will most likely suffer the same fate 25-30 (if not sooner...

Graeme, I noticed some signs for a data storage company while taking these pictures, there also appears to be a small amount of construction going on there. I'm curious how many people will be employed there when its complete. This area is desperate for some activity.

Thundermutt, they used to have a decent Chinese/Asian fast food place in the food court there. The last time I checked, they moved into a building around Washington Square. I don't know if its still then; I don't get that far East very often now a days...

I went there with my grandparents growing up. We'd get pizza in the food court - good memories. I think the drugstore (F&M?) was the busiest store there. It's sad to see what it's become.

Haven't thought about F&M in years...Thanks for the memory!

The Chinese/Vietnamese food place is called Fast Wok, and is located in a former Tucker Real Estate office? just north of the Dennys that recently closed on Washington Street. And yes, it is real good, probably the best Pad Thai in town.
Keep an eye on Irvington and Eastgate, when the real estate crisis lifts, they are poised to be the next hot intown neighborhood according to real estate professionals in the know.

Fast Wok, that's it....Its also good to know they're still around!

Eastgate? Hot? Get real. Too much land available, too many closed car dealerships (some of which have become "second-chance superstores") and restaurants (with more to come), marginal surrounding housing stock, so much sprawl and decay all the way up Shadeland to 52nd.

Maybe MH will take his camera north from Eastgate and show you what I mean.

The Eastgate area is a poster child for sprawl from its cycle of birth to a slow death...Although I'm definitely no expert, I think much work would need to be done to reclaim and urbanize the area; sadly much more than anyone would probably invest into the area at this time.

My wife's grandparents live near there. It is a bit depressing. But as Graeme mentioned Lifeline Data Centers (http://www.lifelinedatacenters.com/eastgate.asp)is turning East Gate into a hi-tech data center.

as you all speculate, i'd like to take the opportunity to let you know that it is indeed being redeveloped at huge expense. 23 million dollars are being spent in total and about 10 of that of what's going on right now. i've been working with the new owners to get the word out and do a photo essay and perhaps a book on eastgate and the surrounding area.

it's great to see this land made use of and not sit around and rot like the dixie square property in harvey, il. peace y'all and i'll try to drop in from time to time.

Fast Wok IS the best Pad Thai in town. I grew up going there, it's sad. I still ask my friends to go up there from time to time. I'm still in disbelief.

Doesn't the army have a post set up there? I think they have linked it to the Amtrak station in Beech Grove via underground railroad. As well as an underground infrastructure between Eastgate and Raytheon. Chemical and Biological crowd control on a massive scale? Who better a prime candidate than desolate east Indy clan.

But yeah, that Pad Thai is off-the-chain!!!
