Near 9th and Delaware

This was one of my favorite childhood stores back in the day...

Completely abandoned, boarded up, and for sale; it may still be a while for this building with the current economy...

I have linked these images to their Flickr source page, which will allow you to view larger sizes, and have access to other cool collaboration tools.

I love the picture of Leon's! The composition is perfect, and the high rises in the back make for a great contrast.

Amazed the map store is still around. It's outlived all of our news stands. Love that place (natch).

The second building was getting rehabbed. Sad to see that it ended.

Thanks Rebecca! I remembered seeing people working on it, but its been neglected for a while now. I hope it resumes sometime down the road.

Let me chime in on the great capture of Leon's. What a neat composition ... very strong elements, foreground and background. Nice grab, Matt.

Also enjoy the map store shot ... and how the neon sign, small as it is, still manages to grab your attention.

Thanks! The sky in the Leon's shot is my favorite feature of this post.

The Leon's picture is also a portrait of the old Indianapolis downtown. That scene hasn't changed since Riley Towers was built (40 years ago?) As we all know downtown is radically different from those days. Not many scenes left that are so timeless.

I have to second (or third, or fourth) those opinions on the Leon's framing. Even with the Riley Towers flanking it on all sides, the vintage character of an institution of the St. Joseph neighborhood shines through.

About the boarded up building, is that on Pennsylvania just south of 11th Street? I know there's another building about a block or two away that's being rehabbed into condos--I called a few weeks ago and it's still happening, even in these dour economic times.
