Bipolar Alabama Street

I live near Alabama street on the Old Northside, and navigate the stretch of Alabama Street from there to downtown every day. Here are a few places on my route that puzzle and amuse me in that ironic sort of way.

Right in the heart of St. Joseph is this great historic urban stretch, but I have a suspicious feeling something is lurking behind me...

Another cool corner at the intersection of Alabama, St. Clair, and Ft. Wayne Avenue

One of my friends lives here. I was telling him the other day how much I liked his townhouse but hated the view across the street, and asked if he hoped something would be built there. His comment: "It's urban. I like it."

Go figure.

Damn...

If I had the money to invest across the street there I would. I'd put in some contemporary townhouses there. Lots of glass and lots of class. :)

The townhouse stretch is one of my favorite stretches in Indianapolis, but the empty space across the street is ripe for something classy. This section of Alabama Street already has a collection of classic and contemporary townhouses; some glass would be interesting in that space.

Thanks for pointing this out--I certainly noticed the townhomes but I can't believe I never discovered what sits across from it. It'll develop in time, but bully to you for helping to point it out.

I did a little spread on that space across from the townhouses when Superior Distributing was bought out last year.

The Alabama side really begs for an extension of the rowhouses, while the Ft. Wayne side would be wonderful for retail with apartments above. I'm surprised this site hasn't been snatched up in the 1.5 years since it went on the market.

Well, maybe I shouldn't be surprised, given the way the market/economy has been since last April!

Now, if that site still hasn't been redeveloped in a couple years, then I'll really be surprised.

Nice photos as usual! I lived around the corner from the row houses almost 20 years ago. At that time they looked about ready for the wrecking ball.

I live in one of the townhouses and I love it there! But the view out my window, while it IS urban, could definitely use a change. I went from a 24th floor Riley Towers view to that old warehouse...doesn't compare.
