Now that you mention it, that would be an interesting concept for some of these old right of ways around Indianapolis...Small flowering trees, bushes, and bulb flowers could be planted along the edges. Not exactly sure how practical that would be, but it would look awesome!

All this is crumbling away now but when it was built it put Indianapolis at the cutting edge of the most technologically advanced infrastructure in the world. Rail traffic throughout the city was raised a level above the streets to eliminate grade crossings.

Very true...They still get a decent amount of use today and provide options for creative use in the future. Not only that, but in my opinion, they are pretty cool looking in a historical kind of way and give many parts of Indianapolis its own personality...
