Indianapolis Intersections - Morris, Plainfield, Vandalia

As most of you can probably guess, I love taking pictures of Infrastructure (ie. railroad bridges, underpasses, intersections, mediums that transport various forms of utilities, ect). Especially the odd ones; the older and weirder, the better. This one definitely falls into that category.

This is the joining of Morris Street, Plainfield Avenue, and Vandalia Avenue which is bisected by an ancient looking railroad bridge on the city's west side; you can see a map of how it's laid out here. This neighborhood is an industrial one, as is a large part of Indianapolis' near west side.

This bridge stands right in the middle of this 4-way intersection.

Looking Easterly toward Vandalia Avenue from Morris Street with the cross tunnel to the South.

Looking West at Morris Street from Vandalia Avenue.

Looking North through the tunnel at Morris Street and Vandalia Ave.

Morris Street to the East, Plainfield Ave. to the West and the tunnel to the North.

I've seen this oddity through aerials before (well, I've seen the whole county through aerials, it's my job), but had no idea it was so old.

It's interesting in these pictures, and others, what is there, if you just leave the road and go a few feet in one direction or another. It's a side of the city we don't often see...

This was the first time I saw this intersection in person. I was really surprised to see how old this is. Most bridges like this usually have a year stamp on them, but this one was just too deteriorated. I wander if this is older than that timber bridge on Pleasant Run Parkway in Garfield Park?

It's funny how we can drive a route everyday, then be amazed what we discover when we walk around the same route.

Just found your blog, very good. Sorry if you already posted a pic as I haven't looked through the whole thing but go to Pleasant Run Trail and look at Pleasant Run where it goes under Prospect St., it's a small waterfall.
