A Night at the Murphy Art Center

I recently visited the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square. It was an open night for the galleries that reside there. I try to come here at least twice a year because it is always an adventure. The galleries, businesses, and the common areas and are one of the coolest places and Indianapolis. Out of respect for the artists' creative property, I did not really shoot any of the art in the galleries, but took plenty of pictures of the environment and culture of the building.

Indianapolis Architecture - Barrister Building / Indiana Parking Garage

Barrister building was built in 1925 and the Indiana Parking Garage was built in 1930. The Indiana Parking garage is unique in a few aspects. First of all, it is the oldest remaining parking garage of it's size. It is also the only parking garage in Indianapolis that has a certain degree of architectural significance, including windows. A parking garage with architectural distinctiveness, gee, what a concept.

I was walking to lunch last Friday afternoon and spotted this mini-demonstration. These were some tough women; it was freezing!

Indianapolis Neighborhoods - Sherman Drive and Brookside Pt. 2

All of these photos were taken North of 16th Street on or near Massachusetts Ave. I started to run out of daylight, so I didn't get as many shots of the area that I wanted to. There's a lot of interesting things to shoot around here; like old infrastructure and warehouses. I would like to come back and take some more shots when the weather improves.

Old school C9 lamps, illuminated Santa and candles makes me feel like a kid again.

Massachusetts and Valley Avenues. This four-way intersection can only be completely seen looking North; I nominate this for the Most Hazardous Intersection of the Week Award (if such a thing existed).

Indianapolis Neighborhoods - Sherman Drive and Brookside Pt. 1

Technically, some of these shots from this multi-part post are from the Brightwood-Martindale neighborhood as well, but I never crossed Massachusetts Ave into the actual neighborhood. The route I took was mainly an industrial one along old rail road tracks and bridges. I chose this route because that's what I wanted to shoot originally, but came back with more than I originally planned.

I would like to thank this establishment for providing me a place to park in this otherwise pedestrian unfriendly area. Don't know quite what the sign says, but the sign graphic and 'Bikini Shows' says enough, I guess.

This bridge is also on Sherman Drive, about half a mile south of Washington Street. Unlike the the other bridge, it doesn't have it's constructed year stamped on it, but it looks to be in it's accelerated years.

Ouch!

The concrete is showing it's age as well.

Not a very pretty site, but it still has a lot of charm.

I guess that's one way of immortalizing yourself.

Once you come out on the other side of the bridge, you are greeted with this.

Why hello furry little visitor; well OK, I was the visitor.

There are not many houses on this area of Sherman, but the ones that are there, look similar to this.

At a strip mall at E. Washington Street and Sherman Dr. Looks like it may have been an old theatre, possibly of the XXX persuasion, but who knows?

10th and Sherman. I love the mural, it complements the underpass well.

Indianapolis Arcitecture - Barnes and Thornburg Building

The construction of this Chicago Schoolesque building was completed in 1909 and was the tallest building in Indianapolis (minus the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument) until the construction of the City-County building in the early 60's. This building was threatened and utilized by the fire department during the Grant fire of 1973*.
