On South Meridian Street in the Sacred Heart area is a stretch of old row houses that are in rough shape. With plentiful houses and other mixed use buildings in this area, the potential of this area could be great.
I think you have a valid point ... Sacred Heart already serves as a worthy focal point for a neighborhood revitalization. Union Street on the east side of it is a nicely landscaped block, and the relatively new housing complex on the west side of it seems to suggest it could work. Plus ... I believe there is a bar/music venue of some sort (name escapes me now) at Palmer and Union, I think, isn't there? So the potential is there for the whole neighborhood to become classy with a little TLC and infusion of community development grant money.
I really appreciate these pictures. If I recall, some of these homes were occupied as recently as 2000 and 2001; in fact, a few should still be occupied. Quite a few of the homes in the neighborhood are well-cared for; this may be the single most depopulated stretch. But I never had any idea this area north of South Village was called Sacred Heart. I was under the impression it was Bates-Hendricks? If I'm wrong, do you know where Bates-Hendricks is in relation to this area?
Joe: That venue is called the Vollrath, which I believe is at Palmer and Talbott (one block east of Union, I believe)...
AmericanDirt: The name of this area is somewhat ambiguous...South Village ends at Raymond Street, where this neighborhood begins north of it. I've heard it referred to as South Meridian, Sacred Heart, and Concord(due to the nearby Concord Neighborhood Center). Bates-Hendricks is located on the east side of Madison close to Garfield Park, which is accessible via a crosswalk(over Madison) near Talbott Street by the Vollrath.
