Crown Hill Skyline

A bit of an experiment with an overcast day. This was taken at the highest point of elevation in Indianapolis; which is located in Crown Hill Cemetery, near the resting place of James Whitcomb Riley.

It's fitting that James Whitcomb Riley's grave occupies the highest ground, and is styled like something from ancient Greece. His poetry defined the Hoosier people, as Homer did for Greece and Virgil did for Rome.

Strawberry Hill is a fun place for the neighborhood kids to ride their bikes downhill.

A few years ago I looked at the contour maps of Marion County. I had always been skeptical that the Riley grave was the highest point in the city. If you want to be technical about it (and I love being technical), Indy's highest point is in northwestern Marion County, to the north of Eagle Creek Reservoir. However, I believe Crown Hill is the highest point within the old city limits.

One of my contacts on Flickr added a comment on this shot mentioning Mann Hill, which is on the far south side as being a high point as well. I don't know if its the highest point of elevation or perhaps just the tallest hill.

Here is the link to the image with the discussion

I'll have to look at the contours tomorrow. Thanks for the link.

Sometimes my job can provide some fun stuff...

The contours say the highest point in Marion Cty is in Pike Township. About a 100 feet higher than Mann Hill

You beat me by two days in these photos... And of course they're so much higher quality. It actually started pouring rain while I was at Crown Hill, just moments after I left the Riley Memorial, when the city skyline was shrouded in a pre-downpour fog.

Is the Mann Hill you're referring to in South Westway Park? Presumably so, though there's a formidable hill in the area by the Glenns Valley Nature Preserve as well.

Years ago I read that somewhere in the 38th & Mitthoeffer area was a few feet higher in elevation than Strawberry Hill. It's pretty flat around there though.

One thing I love about blogging is the interesting things I've learned! I remember a somewhat small, yet, fun to sled hill in Paul Ruster park on the far east side of Indianapolis, near Mitthoeffer and Prospect...
